Winter Fly Fishing Trout Tips

When you just have that fishing itch you can’t scratch, here are some tips for catching trout in winter.

First, its very important that you find the right place to fish.  Many states do not allow fishing for trout during the winter months.  However, there are usually a few places where it is legal.

Next, you want to look for waters where the temperatures stay relatively constant and are less likely to suffer big swings with the weather.  Often times this is best in the tail waters of damns and power plant.  And, you’re more likely to find these ideal conditions a farther south such as Georgia, Arkansas, New Mexico, and even some places in Colorado.  Here, food supplies are more likely to flourish during cold winter months.

While its not likely that trout are feeding on more challenging meals such as bait fish, they are looking for things like larva, nymphs, and pupa.  You’ll need to fish with small sizes and keep your fly deep.

Your fishing technique should be modified to some degree as well.  Trout are likely to be lethargic, but not necessarily enough to avoid a reasonable amount of current.  Trout will often be just outside of the main current holding in pods in front of or behind structure.  So, if you get a bite, keep fishing that same area and you’re likely to find more trout.

For the brave who wish to do a little fishing during the winter months, there is still a chance for a successful day.  I recommend finding a guide or outfitter to improve your chances and find the fish faster.  Visit OutfitterSource.com to find outfitters, guides, and charters across the country.
